A founding Director, he has been Managing Director at O’Connell Mahon Architects since 2008, and has overseen sustained growth and development of the practice within this time.
Sean has over 25 years’ experience in strategic design, planning and development of healthcare facilities and brings an understanding of contemporary clinical planning together with a high level of design awareness to all his projects. His projects include winning designs and submissions for many of the recent leading national healthcare projects, including the new National Children’s Hospital; the National Maternity Hospital; the National Rehabilitation Hospital; the North-West Cancer Centre; the National Programme for Radiation Oncology; the HSE’s Community Nursing Unit projects, and the MWRH Co-located hospital project in Limerick. He continues to advise many healthcare providers and the HSE on current projects and healthcare strategies.
He has served on the various boards and committees within the architectural and healthcare sectors in Ireland and has frequently lectured on current developments and trends in healthcare architecture. He is a former President of the Architectural Association of Ireland (AAI), and has served on the RIAI Council and various boards and sub-committees within the RIAI.
He has also completed a series of elderly residential projects in Ireland and is engaged in a research project with the Health Research Board and Trinity College on Dementia Friendly Irish Hospitals and Long-Term Residential Care for People with Dementia.
More recently Sean was a member the HSE working group on the provision of in-patient accommodation in acute hospitals which was responsible for recommending the introduction 100% single rooms in all new acute hospitals in Ireland. Sean was Chair of the RIAI Healthcare Design Committee (2010-2014) was a member of the HSE Working Group on Aspergillus Risk Prevention (2015-2017). He continues to advise many healthcare providers and the HSE on current projects and healthcare strategies and has frequently lectured on current developments and trends in healthcare architecture.
